Sight seeing tour in Paris

The Boeing 747 aeroplane smoothly landed in Paris at the Charles de Gaulle airport. The long flight took eleven hours to arrive from Asia to Europe. To my greatest pleasure I found a comfortably warm weather with a late afternoon sunshine that made me to quickly forget the fatigue. The day became seven hours longer for me and I tried to take all the advantages of this possibility. I have organised my journey that the connection for the Budapest flight be one day later and, this way I had an evening and a half a day free to see Paris.

In my shoulder bag, I took with me the newest piece of the CardNavigator prototype and also some NaviCards prepared well before my journey.

After landing and passing the usual airport administrative procedures I walked through the arrival hall looking for the car rental stands. Thanks to Internet, I knew already the car rental service that is worth to visit and can offer the most advantageous rental fee.

Within short I sat in a dark blue, metal colour Peugeot 306-type car. The car was a brand new one, it has run less than one thousand kilometres and, I could smell with gratification the characteristic fragrance of the new car upholstery. With a simple operation I mounted the CardNavigator to the bottom of the windshield in the middle by a vacuum fastener. I was waiting with curiosity to see, how much time will be required until the navigator instrument identifies its actual geographical position. Even a few minutes can also be required that the instrument can identify the satellites visible from the new location after its transference a few thousand kilometres away from its previous location. This waiting time seems to be longer than it is really. Finally, the instrument indicated that it was in working order to start the navigation.

Now I inserted the NaviCard of the nearest accommodation facility into the instrument. I have prepared in advance the cards of four accommodation facilities before I left Budapest. These were selected to be in half way between the airport and the downtown of Paris, in one of its suburbs. These accommodation facilities are cheaper, since, they can be found at an outer location, in a lovely garden suburb and, at the same time, they provide a comfortable parking facility.

When leaving the airport parking area I entered a road surrounded by plough-lands. I have never been there. I was watching the direction indicator of the instrument and how the remaining kilometres to drive are decreasing. To run the remaining few hundred meters before reaching destination is always the most exciting thing. During this time, nobody knows exactly where the building to be found will come into sight. It is difficult to find the words to express the feeling of joy on the successful arrival at destination. There were woodland scenery and orderly arranged, clean ways all around, with people absorbed in cheerful conversation on the restaurant terrace of the pension, in a place known up to now only through Internet.

After short look around I inserted the other card to see how far is the next potential accommodation facility. I found that it is slightly more than 6 kilometres away from this place. Come on! Let me see it. Is it even better? After driving along curly roads, passing road forks with traffic circus, finally I found at the fringe of a forest a high building with a translight at the top, already illuminated and visible from afar, announcing that they offer accommodation facilities to the travellers. After asking about the room prices the receptionist quoted the same price as that of the shown one on the Internet Web page when this place has been selected. This fact inspired a good feeling and strengthened my illusion that the things are going better in the countries at west from ours and are even better calculable.

Now, as the shadows of evening were falling I became even more excited to try the card of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. Even so, I visited the third hotel also that was closed to the downtown. The strong traffic and the large tourist buses obstructing also the entrance of the parking made me immediately clear that it would be better to use one of the two previous cards after finishing my ramblings in the downtown.

While going ahead toward the downtown it came in my mind that in Paris the time did not progress. I have been there fifteen years ago and I had the same emotions as that time. Everywhere, old Parisian buildings with characteristic roofs, buttonwoods, leisurely sitting people on the terraces of the coffee houses. Neither new buildings nor modern glass palaces could be found wherever I ambulated.

There were three to four hundred meters remaining to reach the Moulin Rouge cabaret. I was driving in a relatively narrow street slightly upstairs. The instrument indicated two hundred meters remaining when I got a sight of the rotating fantails of the red windmill that I saw before only in the movies. Involuntarily a smile flitted across my face. I experienced it several times but it is still unbelievable that a small, palm size box could do it. Driving just to the end of the street and getting off the car, I took some photographs of the cabaret bathed in colour lights. Checking immediately the taken pictures on the small monitor of the digital camera, I took repeatedly some more photographs until I became sure that there will be at least one perfectly shot among them.

The next card does not lead to a definite building, simply, the destination is a point of the Avenue des Champs Élysées. Here you can find a lot of things to see and even after midnight there was a flood of people and cars. At the end of day that resulted to be seven hours longer, when the fatigue overcame my curiosity and adventurousness I inserted again one of the cards corresponding to a pension and started my way out of the city, toward north-east. During my way I passed quarters with streets carrying a great deal of traffic. I kept at hand some "Joker" cards to record the co-ordinates of the site where, by chance, I can discover some interesting things during my way. This is why I did not missed the occasion to record the co-ordinates of a round square at the perimeters of which I have seen everywhere glamorous and attractive girls who visibly offered their delicate services. Certainly, this is not a funny thing, since nowadays it is not necessary to make such a long journey to see similar show. However, I submit this card, perhaps, it is also worth to see this place in Paris.

The next day it was nearly noon when I awoke. I quickly packed up my things and gone back to the downtown. According to my calculations, I have to take my way back to the airport at fifteen o'clock at least to be there before sixteen. This way I will have enough time to give back the car and to be in the departure terminal by fourteen thirty.

During the early afternoon sight seeing the Eiffel Tower was the last visited and several times photographed remarkable object, then I started my way toward the airport. Surprisingly, after inserting the card the instrument indicated just the opposite direction to go toward the airport as that I expected to be. I quickly admitted that I was confused a little with respect to what is where and I followed with confidence the direction indicated by the instrument.

It produced some tense minutes when due to the road repairs the traffic almost stopped in a small street. That time more than twenty kilometres were still remaining to arrive. The time flitted while the distance did not decreased. Finally, I got rid of the downtown traffic congestion and driving through completely unknown streets and quarters I reached the airport. I admit that I was a little alarmed at being late and I forgot also the name of the terminal where I had to go. Therefore, during all the time I had to rely only on the direction indicated by the instrument that led me back to the point where I took over the car. This helped me to spare some time, since I took over the car in a numbered parking place and I had to give back the car at the same place. This time the CardNavigator highly facilitated to do this job in a spacious parking place.

Finally, I got on the aeroplane in a way as if it would be a city bus and, within short, after taking my seat, the aeroplane began to roll along toward the runway. Already in the aeroplane, it came in my mind that in my hurry I left the vacuum fastener of the instrument on the hired car windshield.

When I pop down my story on paper in Budapest, this not too complicated but important component of the CardNavigator certainly continues its rambling in Paris. Perhaps now, an alarmed eye tourist with eyeglasses sits behind the vacuum fastener consulting hopeless the Paris road map under the feeble inner light of the Peugeot 306-type car...

Epilogue:

The vacuum fastener of the instrument has been arrived back home on the 12th August, at 14:55 with the Paris to Budapest MALEV flight. We should like to express our gratitude to the MALEV staff who took the necessary steps to get it back and to the unknown passenger who took with her the vacuum fastener back to Hungary.
