Excursion to the Őrség area

At the south part of the Őrség area, near to the frontier can be found Nemesnép village. Those who really need a rest they can find an ideal place there to have a few days of rest.

The Abbázia Country Club can be found a few kilometres away from the village and it offers to their guests numerous services in addition to the comfortable accommodation facilities. The recreation farm consisting of several buildings is remarkably clean and ordered even at the first glance. When entering into the buildings we could be convinced that we arrived at a high-standard place. The fresh air and quietness provided by the forest surrounding the area is a great asset for the people coming from a big city who should like to have a rest without abstaining from the accustomed comfort. In each two-storied apartment there are television set, telephone and fully equipped kitchen that will assure comfort.

If you would not want to prepare your main meals, then by taking only a few steps you can reach the restaurant that is open from seven o'clock A.M. to nine o'clock P.M. There is also open-air swimming pool and riding-school in the same place. The horse stalls are exemplary and, these can be found in newly built, good style, clean buildings.

In the same building where the restaurant can be found, there are also effervescent bath, sauna, solarium and conditioning room, so as, there is no need to renounce these modern recreation facilities beside the open-air pastime. Additionally, all of these are available at a very modest price.

In the close vicinity of the comfortable accommodation facility the settlements of Őrség and Göcsej area are offering numerous scenic spots to have a matterful pastime. The scenic spots of these areas show mainly the erstwhile country living style. The ancient monuments found in the vicinity widen the range of scenic spots.

If someone want to take a short circular tour toward Göcsej it is worth to stop in Páka village for a short while. The birthplace of József Öveges can be found there. At the forefront of the well-conserved house there is a tablet as a memorial of their native the popular József Öveges. József Öveges was one of the outstanding scientists who popularised nation-wide the natural sciences, demonstrating a lot of interesting physical experiments in the frame of a television program explaining these experiments with his easy to understand, friendly and original manner. Certainly, there are a lot of people who still remember his pleasant-mannered personality.

After leaving Páka on the way toward Ortaháza you can have a close look at a still operating oil well. It is very interesting to see at close an old mechanism that have a never-resting rocking motion and which who knows how many decades long had pumped out the "black gold", almost drop by drop. The well is barely fenced in but through the open door you can go closed to it. It is strongly recommend to everyone to visit this place who have already seen an oil well only in the popular television film series titled "Dallas".

You have to drive only a few kilometres from Ortaháza to Söjtör that is famous for being the birthplace of Ferencz Deák, the Nation's Wise. The house where Ferencz Deák has born can be found in a small square with a memorial tablet at its forefront. The two storied building is actually empty so as it can be seen only from outside. It is still worth to stay there for a short while remembering the most important figures in our history of the nineteenth century. It is a nice pastime to seat down at the south side of the building in a park among the maple-trees and to enjoy the silence and the sunshine.

On the way back to accommodation place it is worth to pass aside of Bak village and to choose the road 75. Reaching the road fork in the centre of Bak you can go at a good pace toward Rédics village and within an hour you can reach at your accommodation place.

It is worth to expend a full day at least to discover the beauties of the Őrség area. Without going farther than 20 kilometres from your accommodation place you may find various places of interest in the nearby villages. Just about two kilometres away from your accommodation place you can admire the most beautiful belfry of the area. The wooden belfry is found in the centre of Nemesnép village, in a small park.

Going further on toward Márokföld village you can see a lot of beautiful provincial houses at both sides of the road. Some of the houses are kept in good conditions and surrounded by neat farmyards. In the centre of the village you may look around in the not fenced farmyard provincial house of a to get close impressions about the erstwhile country life style.

The next village is Szentgyörgyvölgy. Do not forget to see the Calvinist church. The ornament of the church is the nicely painted coffer-work of the ceiling.

A few kilometres away from here in Velemér you can visit the ancient monument of the village the Roman Catholic church that has been built in the thirteen century. The church is situated among the hills, in a lawn, farther from the road.

You can visit an actually still operating small pottery in Göndörháza. You can also see the old pottery furnace in which the earthenware and the artwork are kiln up to now. If you find something interesting unglazed artwork you can buy it on the spot from the potter doing his job there.

Leaving Gödörháza the road runs through Magyarszombatfa where the pottery is a prevailing vocation. In the village there is a pottery museum where the tool and professional requisite collection of the domestic vocation can be seen.

Continuing the way toward the centre of the Őrség area, toward Őrszentpéter, you can turn off toward Kercaszomor to make a short detour. Kercaszomor is a lengthy settlement situated along the route going toward the Slovenian border. Leaving the village on the forest path a border-line gate blocks the way with a warning table at the side that holds an inscription: State Frontier.

After the short detour you will reach within a short time at Őrszentpéter. Building groups, built on the nearby hills, having names ending with the name fragment "szer" surround the village. Templomszer can be accessed through the route going toward Szalafő where a Roman church can be found that has been built approximately in 1230. The fretwork on the southern door of the church recalls the main entrance ornament of the church of Ják.

Pursuing the same course toward Szalafő you will arrive into Pityerszer among the old houses which as ethnographic museums show in original form the characteristic ancient buildings and the contemporaneous sale-works.

At east from Őriszentpéter, in Pankasz village on the hillside there is a flared belfry built in 1755. A flag-paved steep footpath goes to the belfry where geese and hens are picking up grains quietly in the well-grown grass around it. After leaving the idyllic environment, passing Zalalövő then turning to the route 86 you will find your fastest way back to your accommodation place.

It can easily be stated that this environment is the paradise of the people who have a desire for taking some quiet relaxation. Between the villages the vehicle traffic is very light, no crowd is expected nor around the places of interest. The Abbázia Country Club with its ideal situation is really the most appropriate accommodation place for the people who are choosing this environment to have a few days of relaxation.
